Lucas is having a rough time in his life. His guardian angel Jacob does the best he can, but sometimes, even that’s not enough to save Lucas from the darkness he’s going through. All Jacob can do is stand by Lucas as his life falls apart, no matter what he chooses.
This story is very dark and sad, and includes themes of self-harm, drug abuse, suicide, medical problems and neglect of a child. Lucas desperately tries to be there for the people in his life, including Lisa, a friend’s daughter who needs dialysis treatments, but sometimes his best isn’t enough and he can’t help. A few terrible events lead him on a dark spiral which results in a very moving and emotional ending.
I was very moved by this story, especially as I had a friend take his own life in July and I’ve lived through the dark downward spiral of depression many times myself. I couldn’t help but relate to Lucas’ helplessness in changing the lives around his and I was glad that he found happiness in the end – even if it was not what most readers would expect from a HEA.
I would recommend this one to those who love bittersweet stories and people who can relate to the themes of depression/self-harm/suicide. I want to thank Mitchell for writing this story for my prompt.
