Hugh and Freddy are pilots in the Royal Flying Corps in this WWI-era historical story which details their relationship through uncertain and dangerous times.
Reviewer’s Note: Per Ardua Ad Astra means “Through struggle to the stars” and was the motto of the Royal Flying Corps staring in 1912. I just thought I’d share that little tidbit with you for those who didn’t know.
Not what I expected is probably the best way to describe my reaction to Per Ardua Ad Astra. I jumped in as soon as I saw the historical tag, since M/M historicals are a rare treat for me. I was a little disappointed that the author didn’t go with the possible incest plot line described in the prompt because I like a well-handled incest story once in a while, but I do understand it’s not everyone’s cup of tea. Per Ardua Ad Astra is BDSM, which adds some interesting spice, but won’t interest everyone.
I can’t say I seek out BDSM stories in particular, but this one was certainly hot, with plenty of sex scenes. I can’t say if they’re representative of the scene or not, but they were enjoyable to read. I got a good sense of the times (WWI era), though I probably would have preferred to see more of the wartime action instead of the relative safety of England. I’m usually more of a WWII person, but I has its stories to tell as well. What I did like was the way the story was written, with a strong authorial voice and authentic character dialogue representative of the setting. The excellent writing really helped immerse me in the story.
I was glad it ended on a happy note, as there was some significant doubt on that fact. Hugh and Freddy are a wonderful pair with a unique relationship that really moved me. I loved how the story ended most of all, with an unexpected turning of the tables on their D/s dynamic.
Per Ardua Ad Astra is a well-written historical M/M romance in the often-ignored setting of WWI. It’s definitely worth checking out if you like the time period and/or BDSM-type relationships and sex.
