I’m very, very specific when it comes to slave stories, and it ends in me either loving them, or hating them. Often it depends on issues of consent. I’m not interested in books that are about rape. The willing slave as submissive, however, can be very sexy and sweet if played right.
This book hit all my favorite spots and then some. A loving master. A slave that adores him with all the brightness of the sun. I could have been happy to read about Master and Tam alone. In fact, I was initially disappointed when the third character Kai took up so much of the story, but I grew to care for him, too, and was happy to see his initial reluctance turn into unmitigated delight as he realized how precious his relationship with Tam and their master was.
I really did adore Tam most of all, though. He’s naturally submissive and loves his role and Master. It’s made perfectly clear that even if his collar was cut, Tam would still want to remain at his Master’s side. I loved the level of devotion Tam gave his Master, and that his Master was kind enough to educate him, yet firm enough to dominate him. He doesn’t understand at first why Master made him purchase a new slave, but comes to accept that in the end, his master only had Tam’s best interests at heart and wanted him to feel loved by someone (since the master’s position in society prohibits him returning Tam’s feelings). I ended up with warm fuzzy feelings for all three of them, and the sex scenes were smoking hot as well.
The sequels are high up on my TBR list. I just couldn’t put this one down. If anyone knows of more slave stories that are along the same lines, I would love recommendations. All the slave stories I’ve ended up reading turned into brutal non-con somewhere along the way – or worse, brutal non-con that becomes “love”, my absolutely least favorite convention in the genre. Seriously, though, do yourself a favor and pick this one up – it’s one of my favorite books I’ve read this year.
